Indian currency notes are being printed by reserve bank of India (RBI). RBI was started in 1935. Section 22 of RBI act gave it the power to issue currency on the name of Govt of India, until it is not having its on currency.


1st Indian Currency Notes.

1st not was issued in 1938 with the portrait of King George VI. Its value was 5 rupees. Later 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000 valued currency not were also issued in the same year.

After Independency of India in 1947, Indian symbols had to be chosen. King’s portrait was supposed to be removed. King’s portrait was replaced by national symbol of India. other than Ashoka pillar nothing else was changed in the notes.

Republic India notes

1st republic India notes were issued in 1950. Currency note value was 2 (two), 5 (five), 10 (ten) and 100 rupees denomination. 10 rupees not was same as before. There were change in the design of 2, 5 & 100 rupees notes.

Introduction of Hindi on Currency notes

Hindi language was introduced prominently on Indian currency notes in the year of 1953. High value currency notes were introduced in 1954. 1000, 5000, and 10,000 rupees notes were issued. later in 1978 these high value notes were demonetized.

In 1975, design of 100 rupees note was modified. A picture of Indian agriculture field was introduced. It was symbol of green movement. ( Harit Kranti). It was showing that now India is self dependent the field of grain production cultivation. 100 rupees notes were displaying different activities of agriculture.

Introduction of mahatma Gandhi in Indian currency notes.

Picture of Mahatma Gandhi was introduced in the year of 1969. Note’s denomination were 1rupees, 2 rupees, 5 rupees, 10 rupees and 100 rupees. 1969 was the birth century of mahatma Gandhi. he is also called father of the nation.

Introduction of 20 and 50 rupees notes in Indian currency notes.

20 and 50 rupees value notes were started in 1972 and 1975 respectively.

A complete new set of Indian currency notes was issued in the year of 1980. The design of each denomination was completely changed. in the 1978 , all notes having higher value than 100 rupees were demonetized. later in the year of 500 rupees note was introduced. 1000 rupees note was introduced in the year of 2000. lower value notes of rupees 1 and rupees 2 are discontinued in the year of 1995.

Currency notes are printed in the currency note press in the Nasik, design of these notes are approved by the government of India. design recommendation are being given by the central board of the Reserve bank of India.

new security features were introduced in the “Mahatma Gandhi series” in the year of 1996. new security features includes windowed security thread, a changed watermark, , latent image and intaglio features for the visually handicapped. In the year of 2000 a new note of 500 rupees was also re introduced. It was also issued with new security features.

Star Series

Star series was introduced in the year of 2006. It was introduced specifically for avoiding re printing of defective notes with same serial number. It was a effort for maintaining the sequence.

Rupee 1 note was re-introduced again the year of 2006.

Demonetization & Launch of new Mahatma Gandhi series

Recent demonetization was done on the date of 8 November 2016. Old notes of rupees 500 and 1000 were stopped from use by immediate effect. it was the biggest financial strike on the black money by the government of India. later on 2000 rupees note was issued in 2016. 200 rupees Indian currency notes were introduced in 2017.
